Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise as a young kid. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to promote activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of her social status and influenced that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of an elementary school student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the garbage of one of members of juries. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotions networks like Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
