Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was the daughter
of Eduardo Cruz (a retailer) and Encarna Sanchez (a hairdresser). When she was
a toddler she was an obsessed performer. She would even re-enact TV commercials
for the amusement of her family. However, she decided to focus her efforts on
dance. After pursuing classical ballet for nine years in Spain's National
Conservatory, she continued her education under a variety of famous dancers. At
15, however she discovered her true purpose when she beat more than 300 other girls
at an audition for a talent agency. The contract she signed secured her a
variety of roles in Spanish television shows as well as music videos, which in
turn led to a career on the big screen. Cruz made her film debut in 1993's The
Greek Labyrinth (The Greek Labyrinth). She then briefly was in Framed (1992), a
Timothy Dalton thriller. The third film she starred in was an Oscar-winning
film, Belle Epoque (1992), where she played one of four sisters vying for the
affection of a handsome deserter from the army. The film also won many Goyas
that are the Spanish equivalent of the Academy Awards. Her film resume
continued to expand by 3-4 films per year. Soon Cruz was the leading lady in
Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work
with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket
to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the
thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain
that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). The luck of her life changed
dramatically in 1998, when the industry-related film comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos
(1998) was awarded the title of award for the Best Actress Goya. Cruz was able
to travel to films in English, but All About My Mother (1999) was her first
major international hit. She played a unchaste yet well-meaning nun. Cruz was
in hot demand throughout the Atlantic as well as the west coast as the film
received many awards and praises. The American comedy Woman on Top (2001) which
was her subsequent major project, is about an American chef with extraordinary
culinary abilities and extremely motion sickness. In the US,
